I’ve got a fun DIY pom pom garland for you guys to kick off December!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Yarn (for the pom poms and a thick one for the garland strand) – any colors you want. I chose to use a neutrals, blush, and a red and white one as shown below. NOT pictured below is the thicker yarn, but you can see in the image above and later in this post. I went with an ivory color for the thick yarn to make the garland strand – I bought all of the yarn on sale at Hobby Lobby
- Scissors – I highly suggest you invest in some good scissors if your yarn is on the thicker side (that was my struggle at first… well, maybe it’s because I am lefty)
- Easy pom-pom maker (optional, but WAY easier and quicker to make pom-poms) – mine is from Michaels
All of the images below show a step-by-step process to create this garland. After all of the images, you can find the detailed steps.
DIY Pom Pom Garland:
- Cut yarn about 3-3.5 ft long. This may vary depending on how thick, or how many strings of colors/yarn you use. It was kind of trial and error for the first one for me, so I found out what length worked best after creating the first one. I used a total of 4 colors: tan, ivory, blush, and a thicker red/white one. For each side of the pom-pom maker, I used 3 strings of blush, 3 strings of tan, 3 strings of ivory, and 1 string of the white/red.
- Wrap the designated amount of strands on one side of the pom-pom maker. Make sure to do this tightly and close together. Close this side of the pom-pom maker to form the circle. You can repeat this on the other side with your next strings.
- Cut the middle of each side of the wrapped yarn (along the line in the center of each side of the pom-pom maker).
- Once both sides are cut down the middle, you can trim the edges to make sure yarn is all about the same length along the edges.
- Use a scrap (or cut a long enough piece) to tie in the center of the pom pom maker (the center is where you cut both sides). Tie tight! Do not trim the scrap yet!
- Pull apart the pom pom maker.
- Using the same string you tied the pom pom with, tie that to your thicker yarn for the garland, then trim the string you tied to the garland.
That’s it! Obviously, you can make your garland as long as you want. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
I’d love to see your garland if you decide to make some! 🙂
XOXO, Callie
